Ceiling Lights

You need to maintain at least 2.1 m clearance from floor to the bottom of any ceiling light where people will pass underneath. Low profile flush and semi-flush fixtures are great for low ceilings whilst hanging designs need more height.

Always match the fitting diameter to the room size to maintain proportion and ensure heavy fixtures are fixed securely to a joist or other structural support. Almost all of our fittings work with dimmers and LED bulbs.

Ceiling lights are the foundation of great home design, providing the main source of illumination in most rooms while setting the tone for how your space looks and feels throughout the day. They brighten your home, adds a focal point and complements your décor.

Whether you’re creating a bright, functional kitchen, a relaxed, cosy living room or a welcoming hallway, you’ve come to the right place. With over 50 years of experience, we stock low-profile flush fittings for smaller spaces, statement chandeliers and everything in between.

Ceiling Lights FAQs

What diameter ceiling light for my room?

Measure the room length and width in feet, add the two together, and that is the minimum diameter you should aim for in inches. You can increase this size according to your décor.

Best fixtures for low ceilings?

Flush or semi-flush mounted fittings are a great choice. They are low-profile designs that fit flush or close to the ceiling, so they don’t hang down too far. Need more information? Read our guide on how to light a low ceiling room to help you choose the ideal fitting for your home.

Can ceiling lights be shortened?

Yes, most hanging lights are usually suspended by reinforced cable, rods, wires or a chain and can be shortened or adjusted when the light is fitted. This ensures that it hangs down far enough without hindering people walking through the space.

Are they easy to install?

Yes, but most require removal of the ceiling rose. This contains the lighting circuit and often a permanent live that feeds next ceiling rose in the loop. This requires electrical knowledge to ensure safe operation, and we always recommend installation by a registered electrician.

Do they all need an earth?

No, Class II double insulated light fittings are perfectly safe to use and require live and neutral supplies only. Class II fittings can also be used in properties with an earth loop, but the earth must be omitted. You must not use a Class 1 single insulated fitting in properties without an earth.

What is the best light for a living room ceiling?

A dimmable fitting with warm white LEDs or LED bulbs works best. Combine with table lamps or wall lights for ideal layered lighting.

Can I use a pendant in a low ceiling room?

Yes, but only over areas like dining tables or islands where head clearance isn’t an issue.

How low should a ceiling light hang?

Allow at least 2.1 m distance from the floor to avoid bumping your head.
