Flush Ceiling Lights
Flush ceiling lights are perfect if you are one of the many with rooms with a low ceiling. Or perhaps you just prefer the cleaner lines of having your lighting flush to the ceiling. Many modern homes tend to have lower ceilings than older houses, so lights that hang down a long way are not suitable. Flush mount lighting is the answer as they fit close to the ceiling. This gives the interior designer a fantastic range to choose from. Many glass flush fittings can also be used as wall lights. They are available in a wide range of finishes such as brass, chrome and the satin finishes such as satin brass and satin chrome to complement your existing accessories. There is also a large choice of designs from contemporary to traditional, very ornate through to plain and simple.
Up until a few years ago flush fitted ceiling lights were basically a simple flush ceiling mount with a plain opal glass, such as the type of lights we would generally put into a utility room, office, or downstairs loo. But with more and more homes now being built with lower ceilings, the choice has grown and now we have a greater variety of flush mounted lights to suit every type of decor.
Flush Fitting Lights for Ceilings
Older houses were built with tall ceilings to give an impression of grandeur and opulence. Entrance halls were the first impression that a visitor got when visiting a house and were often large in comparison to the rest of the house. They would have tall ceilings of 10ft or more and even a vaulted gallery to create an impression of space.
High ceiling increased the room volume but didn’t make the floor area any larger. More volume means more air to heat for no discernible extra space, so houses were built with a lower ceiling to save on heating costs and building materials.
The introduction of more energy efficient homes saw the beginning of flush lighting designs as it was not possible to install a hanging fitting with such limited space. Houses built since the 1970’s tend to feature ceilings at around 2.4m, although some very recent builds can be lower. This gives the home owner a more limited choice of light fittings to choose from.
