Kitchen Pendants & Island Lighting
Generally, pendant lighting in a kitchen will be the main source of light and should be bright enough to illuminate the space on its own. In most kitchens this would be a large centrally mounted ceiling pendant or a number of smaller ones installed strategically to give light where it’s needed.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to be able to install a ceiling pendant in the kitchen, which is a shame as they are a wonderful addition to any traditional or contemporary kitchen space. They generally require a higher ceiling to be effective, although they can be positioned over a dining table or breakfast bar either singly or in a row for maximum effect.
Some of our pendants are made from metal or other material that directs all of the light downwards. These are particularly suited to installation above something that you want to illuminate. For example, a table, dining area, breakfast bar or worktop. The size of the pendant will be determined by the size of the area to be lit. For example, a circular 4ft dining table would require a pendant of around 30 – 45cm whilst a 250cm long x 60cm wide breakfast bar would require three smaller pendants of around 10 – 15 cm each. Most tastes are catered for, from traditional ceramic pendants to modern chrome and glass designs.
A pendant made from glass or other material that allows the light through the sides is better suited as a main ceiling light. This type of kitchen lighting is well suited to giving a 360° spread of light and will also bounce ambient light from the ceiling and into the kitchen.
Remember that kitchen lighting should be in layers to give the best illumination and targeted where it is needed to avoid shadows. If you follow this simple rule you will never be disappointed with the results.
