Art Deco Ceiling Lights
Traditional Art Deco Ceiling Lamps
Nothing sets a room off more glamorously than a stylish Art Deco inspired ceiling light. These, typically glass, ceiling light fittings come in a huge range of stunning designs, from the very ornate tiffany, stained glass style to a more subdued flush or semi flush dome shaped lamp which usually has a frosted glass finish and is topped off with either chrome or brass trimmings. The result of adorning your ceiling with a light fitting in an Art Deco style is a room with a classic and elegant feel that will transport you back to a bygone era of grandeur and elegance. Probably not for the faint-hearted interior designer but he who dares always wins.
Art Deco ceiling lights are quite difficult to quantify. They can be recognised by looking for a number of clues such as simple geometric angular or hard-edged shapes, symmetry and clean lines. Even the most complex ceiling lamps will contain some or all of these features.
The Art Deco era flourished in the UK between the first and second world wars, with more and more homes showing off their stylish Art Deco ceiling lights. It was without doubt one of the most influential design styles of all time. To this day, they remain popular with people who own typical 1920’s houses and those with more modern houses looking for a contemporary design.
Polished chrome plating is something that we take for granted today, but this finish had just been perfected. As a result, many of the designs featured the use of this new brilliant chrome finish. Many chandeliers featured heavy clear or opal glass shades that would be acid etched, enamelled or sand blasted to create the desired look.
Modern and contemporary fittings can be very similar to Art Deco designs due to the use of symmetrical chrome arms, clean angular style and heavily facetted or etched glass. This is just the sort of design that would have been around in the 1920’s and 1930’s and occupy pride of place in the more contemporary home to this day.
Original lamps are expensive to buy, may have been badly restored and can often fail due to deterioration of the wiring over time, especially the insulating material. Today, many manufacturers design ceiling fittings in the Art Deco, whilst others create contemporary lighting designs that fall nicely into this category.
We have identified those ceiling light fittings that are suitable for the period home, or suitable for the modern environment where a modernistic design is desirable and put them in one category for your perusal. This should make the job of identifying and choosing a suitable pendant, chandelier or other style of fitting to complement your décor much easier.
