Questions and Answers

Question from George Williams

I have just installed 14 6W LED downlights and my current dimmer is causing them to buzz. I tried am on/off switch and the buzzing went so I know it’s the switch causing the issue. I purchased a Varilight V-pro 1G2W switch which states 120W for up to 10 bulbs capacity and the buzz still remains.

Will the 300W version be more suitable and will it stop the buzzing noise?

These dimmer switches are sensitive to the quantity of LEDs you dim, so if you have 14 LEDs on one dimmer which is only designed to work with 10, then this will cause an issue.

The 300w version will dim up to 30 LEDs comfortably.

On another note, dimmers, by their very nature, will emit a small hum, and if they are installed on a hollow wall this will amplify the hum into an audible buzz so please also bear this in mind,

Question from Andy

Hi, I have 11 x 5.5W dimmable LED lights. Do I need the High Power switch here or the one for lower loads?

This high power dimmer will work well with 11 dimmable LED bulbs. The lower load one is designed for optimum performance with a maximum of 10 bulbs.

Question from Steven Layton

Will the dimmer switch be suitable for a small room with 4 spotlights? I’m concerned about the minimum load. The room currently has 2 x 35w halogen and 2 x 5w LED bulbs. Also, would it be safer to throw out the 2 halogens and replace with matching 5w LEDs? And finally, would you be able to recommend the best dimmer switch for this 4 light room available in satin chrome?

This is a high power dimmer switch which is suited to dim up to 30 LED lamps. The dimmer switch we’d recommend for lower loads is this one

which will dim up to ten lamps on a circuit. It’s not recommended to mix the loads, so changing to all LED would be wise. We can also supply this range in various finishes including a satin chrome. Please contact our sales office for details on availability of the finishes and pricing.
