Choosing The Right Ceiling Light For Your Home

Choosing ceiling lights online can feel overwhelming at first with the sheer amount of styles, finishes and fittings available. The good news is that we can help you find your perfect fixtures by showing your options room by room.

This guide will walk you through the key considerations so you can choose with confidence and create a home that feels beautifully lit and well-balanced.

Concentrate on one room at a time

If you are lighting your whole home or working on a complete renovation, try to avoid choosing everything at once, instead, focus on one room first.

Each room serves a different purpose, so the lighting should reflect that. For example, a cosy living room or a functional kitchen will both need a different approach.

Once you’ve decided which light works best in the first room, move onto the next. This keeps the process simple and prevents you getting overwhelmed with too many choices.

Ceiling height has the biggest impact on your choice

Before you think about the style or finish, check your ceiling height. This single factor will immediately narrow down your options.

  • Modern homes or low ceiling rooms of 2.3m (7ft 6in) and below.

For low ceilings, compact flush ceiling lights offer a stylish, space-saving solution. Specifically designed for reduced ceiling heights, these sleek and stylish fixtures don’t reduce headroom by much.

Modern flush ceiling lights are anything but boring, with decorative glass and modern LED fittings, there are plenty of stylish options available.

  • Standard Ceilings of around 2.4m (8ft).

You can comfortably choose a flush ceiling light, or our semi flush ceiling lights offer the perfect balance between the compact design of flush fittings and the elegance of pendant lights. These are ideal for creating extra presence without sacrificing headroom.

  • Higher ceilings over 2.6m (8ft 6in)

High ceilings allow you to be much more adventurous with your choices. Our selection of pendant lights, chandeliers and multi-drop fittings all work beautifully and contribute to filling the vertical space in your room.

Double height spaces such as stairwells or vaulted rooms benefit from something more spectacular, such as a multi-spiral pendant or long drop centrepiece.

Top tip: Check the dimensions carefully, as product height only refers to the fitting itself. The maximum drop gives you the exact measurement in mm, including the chain or other suspension, to the lowest part of the fixture.

Choose your style next

Once the practicalities of ceiling height and type are covered, you can start to have some fun with the style. Think about the overall feel of your room, is it or do you want it t look:

  • Modern and minimal
  • Traditional or classic
  • Contemporary
  • Period or character (Art Deco, farmhouse, Victorian, etc)

The key here is consistency, while each room will have its own character, the lighting should feel as it belongs to the overall style of your house.

A common mistake is to select a light solely because it’s on trend. Instead, aim for something that complements your space and fulfils the functions for which you will use the room. Fashion and trends come and go, but if you choose the correct fitting it will blend well with your home remaining a feature for many years without feeling dated.

Here are some typical style examples:

Choose your ideal finish

The finish you select will have a huge bearing on the aesthetics of your chosen room. The best approach is to consider the finishes that are already present to achieve a cohesive look. Look at:

  • Existing floor and table lamps
  • Door handles
  • Light switches and sockets
  • Curtain poles
  • Furniture accents
  • Fireplaces or other metal finishes

Coordinating with these elements helps create a polished uniformed look.

Popular finishes include but are not limited to:

  • Polished chrome (clean and modern)
  • Satin nickel or satin silver (soft and versatile)
  • Brass and antique brass (warm and timeless)
  • Black or white finishes (bold and contemporary)
  • Colour painted (classic and versatile)

Getting the size right

Size is one of the most important and misunderstood parts of choosing your ceiling light. Many of our customers underestimate the size of fitting they need.

A light that is too small can feel lost on your ceiling while one that is too large can overwhelm the room. A simple way to visualise the size is easy and surprisingly low-tech:

Cut out a circle of cardboard to match the diameter of the fitting in mind and hold it at ceiling height (using a stepladder). This gives you a realistic sense of scale before you commit. It may sound simple, but is one of the most effective ways to avoid sizing mistakes.

Quick size guide

  • Small rooms (up to 3m x 3m): 30-45cm diameter
  • Medium rooms (3-5m width): 45-60cm diameter
  • Large / Open-plan spaces: Over 60cm or multi-drop/statement pieces

Here’s a quick and easy visualisation.Quick size comparison guide showing three different diameter fixtures in small, medium and large rooms.

Tip: Add your room length and width in feet and that gives you the minimum size you should be aiming for. For example, a 14ft x 16ft room would require a fixture with a diameter of around 30 inches (76cm). A room of 12ft x 14ft would require a fitting of 26 inches (66cm). Brightness and room function

Think about how your room is used as well as how it will look and ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do I need the light to be bright and functional? (Kitchens, bathrooms)
  • Would I like softer ambient lighting? (Living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms)
  • Will I want additional lighting? (Wall lights, floor or table lamps)

Layering your lighting gives you options and almost always produces the most desirable results. A single ceiling fitting is able to provide the majority of your lighting needs but is rarely enough. Consider combining it with wall lights and portable floor or table lamps for added flexibility and extra comfort. The vast majority of our ceiling lights are dimmable and LED-compatible, giving you full control over brightness and mood.

Here’s an excellent visual example of layered lighting.

Common Ceiling Light mistakes to Avoid

Now that you’ve found a ceiling light you love, it’s worth taking a moment to avoid some of the most common buying mistakes:

  • It’s too small

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is selecting a ceiling light that is undersized for the room. A fitting that looks perfect in a product photo can often appear much smaller once installed.

Always check the diameter measurement and use the cardboard template method described above if you’re unsure.

  • Ignoring ceiling height

A beautiful chandelier may look stunning online, but if your ceiling height is limited it can quickly become impractical.

Always check the overall drop and leave adequate headroom, particularly in hallways, bedrooms and living rooms.

  • Focusing on style over lumen output

While appearance is very important, your ceiling light still needs to provide enough illumination for the room.

Consider the number of lights, lumen output and whether additional lighting such as wall lights or lamps will be used.

  • Following trends too closely

Interior design trends come and go. Choosing a ceiling light that complements the style of your home rather than the latest fashion often results in a more timeless look that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

  • Relying entirely on a Single Light Source

Most rooms benefit from layered lighting, regardless of size. Combining ceiling lights with wall lights, table lamps or floor lamps creates a more flexible and comfortable lighting scheme while helping eliminate dark corners.

Finally

Choosing ceiling lighting doesn’t have to be complicated. Once you understand the basics of height, style, finish and scale, the decision becomes much clearer.

And remember, the best lighting will feel natural in your rooms and will complement your space without overpowering it.

Have a look at our FAQ’s below for the most common issues people ask us about.

What size ceiling light should I choose?

Add your room length and width in feet and that gives you the minimum size you should be aiming for. Larger rooms require larger fittings to provide balanced illumination and visual proportion. Always check both the diameter and height measurements before purchasing.

Are flush ceiling lights suitable for low ceilings?

Yes. Flush ceiling lights sit close to the ceiling, making them ideal for rooms with limited headroom while still providing effective illumination.

What is the difference between a flush and semi-flush ceiling light?

Flush ceiling lights sit directly against the ceiling. Semi-flush designs drop slightly below the ceiling, offering a more decorative appearance while still being suitable for standard ceiling heights.

How bright should my ceiling light be?

The ideal brightness depends on the room’s purpose. Kitchens and home offices typically benefit from brighter lighting, while bedrooms and lounges often suit softer illumination.

Can I use a chandelier in a room with standard ceiling heights?

In many cases, yes. Compact semi flush chandeliers and shorter-drop designs can work well in rooms with standard ceiling heights, provided there is sufficient clearance beneath the fitting.

What ceiling light finish is most timeless?

Chrome, satin nickel, brass and antique brass remain popular choices because they work well with a wide variety of interior styles and tend to remain fashionable over time.
