A domed flush mounted fitting will give good overall illumination, whilst a spotlight bar can target the areas where you need it.
Suitably IP rated recessed downlights are popular and well suited to a modern bathroom. Care should be taken to ensure that they are positioned properly to illuminate the areas you need such as above a shower or directly in front of a mirror or cabinet. They are now available with built in tilt adjustment so you can point them wherever needed.
Years ago, a bathroom would consist of an iron or steel bath, a porcelain sink and a toilet, and the walls would be painted in an eggshell finish to try and protect the walls from steam. There would probably be a batten lamp holder on the ceiling or wall with a 100 watt light bulb poking out.
