Art Deco Ceiling Lamps

At its height in the UK between the first and second world wars, the Art Deco era was probably one of the most influential designs of all time. To this day, these designs remain popular with people who own typical 1920's houses and those with more modern houses looking for a contemporary design. Some of you may be fortunate enough to own a home like that in our picture?

The Art deco style is really quite difficult to quantify. It can be recognised by looking for a number of clues such as simple geometric angular or hard-edged shapes, symmetry and clean lines. Even the most complex Art Deco ceiling light will contain all of these features.

Polished chrome plating is something that we take for granted today, but this finish had just been perfected at the beginning of the Art Deco period. As a result, many of the designs featured the use of this new brilliant chrome finish. Many Art Deco ceiling lights featured heavy clear or opal glass shades that would be acid etched, enamelled or sand blasted to create the desired look.

Modern and contemporary fittings can sometimes be confused with Art Deco designs due to the use of symmetrical chrome arms, clean angular style and heavily facetted or etched glass. This is just the sort of design that would have been around in the 1920’s and 1930’s and occupy pride of place in the more contemporary home to this day.

Original Art Deco lamps are expensive to buy may have been badly restored and can often fail due to deterioration of the wiring insulating material over time. Today, many manufacturers design fittings in the Art Deco style, whilst others create contemporary designs that fall nicely into this category.

We have identified those Art Deco style ceiling lights that are suitable for the period home, or suitable for the modern environment where a modernistic design is desirable and put them in one category for your perusal. This should make the job of identifying and choosing a suitable ceiling fitting to complement your décor much easier.
