Traditional IP rated outdoor wall lights and lanterns add style to any period property. They provide a welcome to your visitors by illuminating their path and act as a deterrent by lighting vulnerable areas around your home. Choose from a variety of finishes including verdigris, black, rustic, white and stainless steel.
There is no question that stainless steel and chrome modern finishes look great on more contemporary houses, but they are not as well suited to the more traditional home. It is often the case that choosing a modern fitting just won't look aesthetically right and in more cases than not are changed next season for another style.
If your house is a traditional home, then the best type of light for your porch or exterior wall is a traditional outdoor wall light that will set off your home in a style that will never outdate. There are so many different styles of traditional lights and to be honest for an older property whatever the choice you couldn’t go wrong with any of them.
We appreciate that choosing an outside light fitting from an online catalogue is not always easy. A lot of people prefer to actually see the light in real life, but sometimes this isn’t possible so here are a few tips that will help you choose with confidence.
Take a step back from your house and look at where you will be positioning your exterior wall lights. What colour will add contrast to or blend in with the outside of your home? As a rule of thumb, if your house is rendered and it painted white or cream, then if you had a white coloured wall light, the colour and style would get lost and blend in with the colour of your house, so a darker colour would be best. If your brickwork is natural brick then a contrast of colour with a permanent fixture of your house will be ideal such as your front door, even the letterbox.
Before you finally settle on the colour and finish, do a little bit of homework. For instance is it just a wall light you will need? If so, then there’s no problem. But will you be matching it with any other garden light such as a post top light, gate post lights or a garden lamp post? If so, be careful to choose a colour and style that is part of a complete range.
You should also consider the physical size of the wall light. This is all about proportion. If your home is large, appears to be taller, or has a large front door or window, a larger outdoor wall light will look more in keeping. If you live in a smaller house or bungalow, a larger light may just look too clumsy.
