Energy Saving Halogen Light Bulbs
Not so long ago, the only energy saving light bulb choice was the compact fluorescent lamp. The energy saving fluorescent light bulb is much larger and less attractive to look at.
If you are looking for an energy saving alternative for your chandelier, or any other light fitting where the lamp is in plain view then you should consider the energy saving halogen light bulb.
The halogen lamp is available in every base cap and in a candle lamp, golf ball and household light bulb. They save 30% in energy costs and last twice as long as an incandescent bulb, whilst costing around 10 - 20% more than its equivalent incandescent lamp.
These light bulbs are simply a halogen capsule encased within a glass light bulb and look exactly the same when illuminated. They are 'C' energy rated so will not be phased out in the foreseeable future.
LED Bulbs
There is no doubt that LED light bulbs are the future. They use up to 95% less energy than their traditional equivalent, run very cool and last up to 50,000 hours in normal use.
The LED lamp has many limitations. It is very directional and best suited to spotlights, floodlights and downlights. LED light bulbs are not yet well suited to applications where 360° illumination is required. These are already available but not yet of a standard that represents a realistic alternative.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs
Not so long ago, compact fluorescent lamps were awful things that took an age to warm up and get to full brightness. Thankfully, those days are long gone with the third generation of the CFL lamp.
Compact fluorescent lamps are now an excellent alternative to an ordinary light bulb, especially when the bulb cannot be directly viewed. They typically offer a 60% energy saving over a traditional light bulb and last much longer.
CFL light bulbs are now almost instant start with excellent colour rendition. Unlike an ordinary lamp, they are available in different colour temperatures including warm white and cool white. Warm white is best suited to a background lighting application whilst the cool white is best suited to task lighting applications.
We prefer the compact spiral fluorescent lamp. It provides the same amount of light as a much larger lamp due to the spiral design. It is much less intrusive than a regular CFL lamp that can sometimes poke out from the light fitting.
