Semi Flush Mounted Lights
Semi flush ceiling lights play an important role when trying to find something suitable for rooms with a lower ceiling. Newer modern homes tend to have ceilings that are around 2.2M whereas older properties have ceilings of 3M and higher. It is sometimes impossible to have a pendant or drop fitting in a newer style property due to the height limitation.
A semi flush ceiling light may be the answer. It will normally have a central drop or stem on which the arms are mounted. They are usually between 150 and 350mm tall making them perfect for rooms with lower ceilings.
The great thing about them is that they can be used anywhere. On high ceilings they can be a feature whilst being less intrusive. Mounted on a landing or in a stairwell, a large semi flush light can look spectacular as the eye is drawn up the stairs to the fitting above.
Halogen semi flush lights are spectacular and can be a fantastic addition to any room, with the added benefit of being dimmable.
More traditional styles may have glass shades fitted with either upward or downward facing bulbs. It is important to remember that both will give a different effect. The upward facing bulb will bounce light off the ceiling and back into the room giving a softer more diffused light, whilst the downward facing bulb will give a more direct and consequently brighter light. It is also worth remembering that you can see the lamp bulb in a downward facing fitting so it may be worth fitting opal or soft tone lamps.
Whatever style you decide on, please ensure that your choice will give adequate light for its use and that it is proportionate to the surroundings.
