If you are fortunate enough to live in a house with large rooms and high ceilings, nothing comes close to the majesty and grace of a large multi armed crystal chandelier. They are not just for rooms but will also look spectacular in a large entrance hallway or landing. The atmosphere on entering any room is transformed wherever they are on display.
Chandelier is the term for any multi-armed pendant. The main requirements are that it has more than one lamp and is normally suspended from the ceiling, although there are now an increasing number of flush and semi flush fitting chandeliers available for use in rooms with lower ceilings. The amount of light arms on a traditional chandelier usually range from 3 to as many as 36 for a very large design.
Once crystal is added to any chandelier, it is completely transformed and becomes a stunning feature. In addition, crystal is considered by many to bring good luck. Whilst this may just be superstition, there is no question that this is the most stunning type of fitting available.
Crystal chandeliers are made using a strong frame housing the lamp arms that is then decorated with masses of cut crystal. The frame needs to be strong as lead crystal is very heavy. When illuminated, the crystals refract the light produced and spread the whole colour spectrum throughout the space in which it is installed.
Lead crystal has been around for a long time and is greatly prized for it’s lighting properties. It is widely recognised that 24% lead content and over gives the best quality crystal. Once produced the crystals are then faceted like a diamond so that they maximise the rainbow effect that the light produces when it shines through.
The weight of a crystal chandelier can be considerable. Higher quality crystal is considerably heavier than that of lower quality. On larger crystal chandeliers, the crystal can account for 75% of the total weight of the fitting, amounting to 60Kg or more. Our largest contemporary crystal chandelier weighs in at 70Kg!
We supply many styles of crystal chandeliers of a size and price to suite everyone, so it is very easy to install one in almost any room. Fortunately they no longer need to be made from solid gold. Modern manufacturing techniques mean that they are now available in almost any finish imaginable.
Some people are put off by the thought that the crystals have to be removed every few weeks and cleaned. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is really quite siple to keep your crystal looking as good as the day you bought it. There is a full artcle in our lighting information pages that explains how to clean crystal light fittings.
